Winter is over, the flowers are blooming, and it’s as good of a time as any for a little bit of spring cleaning! For many of us, that means tidying up our homes and getting rid of all that extra clutter. But your living space isn’t the only thing you should consider cleaning up this season; your pearly whites could probably also benefit from some care! Here are a few tips from your dentist to help you bolster your oral hygiene routine this spring so that you can set your smile up for a healthy and bright rest of the year!

1. Update Your Toothbrush

Your toothbrush is your primary means of caring for your teeth, so you should inspect it for signs of fraying or discoloration. Brushes with fresh, softer bristles are ideal since they minimize enamel loss. It’s important to replace your toothbrush every 3 or so months, but even sooner if you’ve been sick. It’s also worth noting that electric toothbrushes are worth considering, as they’ve been proven to clean more thoroughly than their manual counterparts.

2. Sanitize Your Toothbrush Holder

While replacing your toothbrush as needed is a good way to keep things sanitary, it’s also wise to ensure that where you’re storing your toothbrush is kept clean. The container where you leave your brush is exposed to the very same germs and bacteria that thrive throughout the rest of your bathroom, so be sure that you’re sanitizing it regularly to prevent the transmission of bacteria.

3. Check Expiration Dates

Just like anything you’d find in your refrigerator or pantry, dental hygiene products also have expiration dates and shouldn’t be used if these dates have passed. It never hurts to double-check that the product you’re using is still good; you wouldn’t want to cause any unnecessary complications!

4. Set Up a Professional Spring Cleaning

Kicking off your spring season with a dental checkup might not seem as exciting as taking a road trip down to the beach, but these visits are a great way to put your smile’s well-being first. Not only do they let your dentist keep tabs on the status of your smile, but it lets them safeguard it from future issues. During these visits, your dental team will polish away stains, remove tartar, and scrape away the plaque that threatens your teeth. This leaves your smile as healthy and bright as possible moving forward; you simply can’t replicate what your dentist can do in your own bathroom!
