Effects of Missing Teeth

Tooth loss can happen at any age for a number of reasons like severe decay, gum disease, or physical trauma from slips or sports accidents. And while you may not think that losing one or two teeth is a big deal, you’ll soon find that it affects more than just your appearance, for example:

  • Difficulty Eating: Chewing becomes harder, which may limit your diet and affect your nutrition.
  • Speech Issues: Missing teeth can make it difficult to pronounce certain words clearly.
  • Facial Changes: Bone loss and missing teeth can cause your face to appear sunken and older than you actually are.
  • Shifting Teeth: If you still have some natural teeth, they may move out of alignment due to large gaps.
  • Loss of Confidence: Losing teeth can make you feel down or even guilty, leading to anxiety, depression, and loss of interest in being social.

Replacing missing teeth with dentures can prevent many of these issues and restore both function and confidence in your smile!

Dentures are a great solution for many patients, but they work best when certain conditions are met. You may be a good candidate for dentures if you:

  • Have multiple missing teeth or are completely edentulous (toothless).
  • Are willing to care for your new prosthetics and comply with treatment.
  • Have healthy gums to support a secure fit.
  • Are not a candidate for other tooth replacements due to bone loss or health factors.
  • Are looking for a cost-effective tooth-replacement option.

At your consultation, we’ll examine your teeth and gums, assess your oral health, and discuss whether dentures are the best choice for you. If you’re unsure, we can also explore alternative options.

Alternative Tooth-Replacement Options

Example of implant dentures in Sparks

Dentures are a fantastic treatment for many patients, but they aren’t the only way to replace missing teeth. Depending on your needs, you might consider:

  • Dental Implants: A permanent solution that replaces both the root and crown of a tooth, offering superior stability and jawbone preservation.
  • Implant Dentures: A hybrid between implants and dentures, providing a more secure fit without adhesives.
  • Dental Bridges: Ideal for replacing one or a few missing teeth, bridges are made up of dental crowns that serve as anchors and false teeth called pontics between them.

During your visit with us at our Sparks office, we’ll help you compare these options and choose the best one for your smile, lifestyle, and budget.

Types of Dentures

Full set of dentures

Vista Dental Care proudly offers three types of dentures: partial, full, and implant. While the first two options are more common because they’re less invasive and more affordable, the latter (implant dentures) offer greater stability and longevity. During your visit, you can expect that we will discuss which one is right for you.

Partial Dentures

Using an acrylic base that matches your existing gum color, artificial teeth are placed on top of the base in designated areas to fill in the gaps of multiple missing teeth. The partial includes a metal framework, complete with clasps or clips that anchor to existing, healthy teeth for maximum support. These prosthetics are removable, so you can easily clean them.

Full Dentures

Using the same materials as a partial denture (except there is no metal framework), full dentures replace an entire row of missing teeth. They’re crafted to fit snugly on top of the gums and rely on natural suction and denture adhesive for a stronger hold. These prosthetics can be crafted for one or both arches and generate improved bite power and aesthetics.

Implant Dentures

Unlike traditional partial and full dentures, implant dentures are attached to small titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone. They mimic the roots of teeth by stimulating the bone to prevent further tooth and bone loss over time. When a custom denture is placed on top and secured in place, the result is a set of teeth that can last 30+ years and function normally for better eating, speaking, and confidence.

If you still have healthy natural teeth, dentures can help to keep them in ideal condition. By filling in the gaps with a partial denture, you can keep your teeth securely in place. Dentures also help to support the weight of routine chewing, reducing wear and tear of the natural teeth over time.

Expanded Opportunities

When you attend interviews, negotiate sales, attend social events, making an excellent first impression is key. Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you, so having one that looks healthy does nothing but help.
