How Do I Know Which Denture Adhesive is Right For Me?

Denture adhesive will keep your replacement teeth stuck firmly in place – which is especially helpful if you’re new to this restoration. But seeing as how there are quite a few types of adhesive to choose from, you might be wondering, “How do I know which one is right for me?”

Ultimately, it will come down to your personal preferences. Here’s what you need to know about each type of denture adhesive.

Denture Adhesive Creams

Adhesive creams for dentures come in a tube, and have a lotion-like texture. To apply, you’ll simply squeeze out a small amount onto the part of your dentures that will rest on your gums. Once the dentures are pressed against your arch, the cream will create a cushion of suction between your gums and restoration.

This type of product is easy to use, cost-effective, and can provide relief for sensitive gum tissue. But it’s not the strongest option, and if your mouth tends to be on the moist side, excess saliva could break down the adhesion.

Denture Adhesive Powders

Powder-type denture adhesives are sprinkled on the underside of dentures, sort of like a garnish. Many people appreciate that it’s quick to apply, and if it gets on the countertop or floor, it’s easy to clean up. Simply use a dry towel or vacuum, and you’re done!

While powder denture adhesives provide a long-lasting hold, some find it difficult to coat their dentures evenly, which can result in uncomfortable clumps of product.

Denture Adhesive Strips

Imagine a thin piece of tape that’s sticky on both sides. That’s pretty similar to a denture adhesive strip! They’re pre-cut into standard sizes, but you can easily trim the strips down to fit more precisely with your customized dentures. Once you’re satisfied with the shape, you’ll stick the strips to the bottom of your dentures.

This type of adhesive is strong and low-profile. Their flexibility is a definite “pro,” though depending on how much trimming you’ll have to do, applying them can take time.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Finding the best denture adhesive product for you might take some time and a bit of trial-and-error. Even if you’re fairly confident in which type you’ll prefer, effectiveness and comfort can vary by brand. Don’t be afraid to experiment – after all, there is no right or wrong answer. Creams, powders, and strips each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and you might be surprised at how well a certain type works for you!
