Learn How to Take Care of Your Dentures

Dentures can restore your smile and improve your confidence, but just like natural teeth, they require consistent care to stay in top shape. Proper maintenance not only keeps dentures looking their best—it also helps extend their lifespan and protect your oral health. Whether you’re new to wearing dentures or simply need a refresher, here’s what you need to know about taking care of them.

Clean Them Daily

Dentures should be cleaned every day to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria. However, don’t use regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and cause tiny scratches that trap bacteria. Instead, use a soft-bristle denture brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser. Be sure to clean all surfaces, including the parts that come in contact with your gums.

Rinse your dentures thoroughly under running water before placing them back in your mouth, especially if you’ve used a cleaning solution, which may contain ingredients not meant to be ingested.

Soak Them Overnight

Most dentures need to stay moist to retain their shape. Place them in a denture-soaking solution or clean water overnight unless your dentist advises otherwise. Never use hot or boiling water, as it can warp the material. Regular overnight soaking helps keep dentures clean, fresh, and comfortable to wear.

Handle With Care

Dentures are durable, but they’re not indestructible. When cleaning or handling them, do so over a towel or a sink filled with water to prevent breakage in case they’re dropped. Avoid bending or damaging the clasps or plastic components, especially with partial dentures.

Watch for Fit Changes

Over time, changes in your jaw and gums can affect how dentures fit. If your dentures start feeling loose or uncomfortable, schedule a dental appointment. Don’t try to adjust them yourself—this could cause more damage. Poorly fitting dentures can lead to irritation, mouth sores, and even infections.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Even if you wear full dentures, keeping your mouth clean is still important. Gently brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth with a soft toothbrush each morning before inserting your dentures. This helps remove plaque and stimulates circulation in the soft tissues.

If you have partial dentures, continue brushing and flossing your remaining natural teeth daily to prevent decay and gum disease.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Routine dental checkups are still essential when you have dentures. Your dentist will assess the fit of your dentures, examine your oral tissues, and look for signs of infection or other issues. Regular visits also give you the chance to ask questions and ensure you’re using the best cleaning methods and products.

Taking a little time each day to care for your dentures will help preserve your smile and your comfort.
