Each set of dentures is carefully crafted based on detailed measurements of the patient’s mouth to ensure they enjoy a comfortable fit and a functional bite. However, these appliances do not address the issue of bone loss in the jaw, meaning dentures will eventually lose their fit due to the changing shape of the mouth. While it might be tempting to try to adjust your dentures on your own, this can damage your appliance or cause oral injuries. Here’s why you should see your dentist for denture adjustments and relines.

Why Do My Dentures Not Fit Properly Anymore?

The jawbone depends on the stimulation it receives from the teeth during the chewing process to stay healthy and strong, and tooth loss deprives it of this crucial exercise. Briefly after a tooth is permanently dislodged, the bone structure that supported it will begin to atrophy and recede, and the loss of many teeth will only compound this problem. Since dentures do not restore this exercise to the jaw, they will need occasional adjustments to fit properly. Dentures that receive excellent care often last seven years or more.

Why Shouldn’t I Reline My Dentures Myself?

While you may find a plethora of do-it-yourself denture reline kits and tutorials on the Internet, these methods can lead to severe issues such as ruining the way the dentures fit or redistributing the pressure of chewing in ways that are harmful to your gums, jaws, and remaining teeth. The best way to avoid these problems is to see your dentist for all your denture adjustment needs.

How Can My Dentist Adjust My Dentures?

In some cases, your dentist may need to make only minor adjustments to help your dentures fit more comfortably. However, they may have to perform a reline, which is the placement of additional material along the interior of the denture, to address more severe issues. This can take the form of a:

  • Hard reline: Your dentist will place hard materials such as acrylic along the points of contact between your dentures and gums to compensate for lost bone mass.
  • Soft reline: Your dentist will similarly reinforce your dentures using a soft material. While the results do not last as long, this method may be ideal for those who have sensitive gums or have recently received oral surgery.

Eventually, it will be necessary to replace your appliance completely. If you are interested in a more permanent restoration, you may wish to ask your dental professional about implant dentures.
