pretty woman smiling hand raisedThere once was a time when you would take a trip to Lake Tahoe with family and friends and refuse to pose for any photos. And on the rare occasions that you stood in front of the lens, you would offer a partial-to-half smile, because you were ashamed of your missing teeth. Now with your dental implants in Sparks, you own the camera. Your smile is full and vibrant, reflecting the infectious personality that everybody knows you for. But, your dentist wants you to remember that there are important habits you need to practice to maintain your beautiful new smile.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an amazing method of restorative dentistry, giving dentists the ability to replace the entire tooth instead of just the visible portion. They are made from durable titanium that is inserted below the gum line, and fuses with your bone tissues.

This is typically completed through a two-part process where the implant is placed first, and then followed by the insertion of the missing teeth. The last phase takes place after you heal from the initial implant surgery.

Tips for Caring for Your New Dental Implants

The most important fact to know and remember about dental implants is that they are designed to act as your normal teeth. That means that the same practices required to maintain your them also apply to your new implants.

  • Brushing – Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice daily. And be sure to choose a toothbrush that is comfortable for you, avoiding abrasive bristles that can irritate your gums.
  • Flossing – It’s hard to find a substitute for flossing, as it enables you to clean in areas that are hard to reach with your toothbrush, and where harmful bacteria like to hide. You should floss at least twice daily as well.
  • Mouthwash – This is a great supplement to brushing and flossing, serving two purposes. It removes bacteria by washing the mouth, and also moistens it. Maintaining a moist mouth is another way of fighting bacteria.
  • Limit Snacking – Constant snacking means constant bacteria thriving in your mouth. And this can contribute to gingivitis, as the bacteria can irritate and inflame your gums.
  • Don’t Smoke – As well as being bad for your overall health, smoking creates a toxic mouth, causes bad breath, and stains your teeth.

Be Proactive

You finally have the smile you’ve been wanting for so long, and can chew your food and speak properly. Now your job is to protect it. Along with maintaining the protocols of excellent dental care, be sure to get in to see your dentist in Sparks at least twice a year for cleanings and examinations.
